Doucai chicken cup (jigang bei), Chenghua Ming Dynasty(1465-1487)

Hailed as the "peak treasure of Ming Dynasty porcelain," these cups exemplify the doucai craftsmanship: first, outlines were sketched with underglaze blue pigment ("pingdeng qing" [equal green], featuring a soft and elegant hue) and fired at 1300°C; then, red, green, yellow, and other overglaze colors (such as iron red and copper green) were applied, followed by a second low-temperature firing. The delicate and mild colored glazes are a signature of Chenghua doucai's "elegance and refinement."As the pinnacle of Ming doucai craftsmanship, they pioneered the new paradigm of "underglaze blue combined with overglaze colors" in painted porcelain, laying the foundation for later wucai (five-color) and famille rose porcelains. Fewer than 20 intact examples survive worldwide, with only 4 in private collections, making them "museum-grade national treasures."

主题:杯身绘"子母鸡图”,两组公鸡、母鸡带领雏鸡觅食的场景,间以山石、牡丹、兰草;

Theme: the cups are decorated with "mother hen and chickens" motifs, depicting two scenes of roosters and hens leading their chicks in foraging, interspersed with rockwork, peonies, and orchid grass.

Meanings: the chicken is a homophone for "ji" (auspiciousness) in Chinese, symbolizing "good fortune and fulfillment of wishes." The mother hen and chicks motif embodies "family harmony and the continuity of offspring" — legend has it that these cups were crafted by Emperor Chenghua to please Noble Consort Wan, embodying the warmth of family life. Peonies represent "prosperity and nobility," while the rockwork signifies "longevity."
