Pair of famille rose bowls with over-the-wall nine peach motif, Yongzheng Qing Dynasty(1723-1735)

This pair of famille-rose bowls decorated with the over-the-wall nine-peach motif dates from the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty. Each piece takes the form of a standard, elegant bowl with an everted mouth, deep belly and ring foot — a hallmark of Yongzheng porcelain, renowned for its graceful lines and harmonious proportions. The body is crafted from the iconic glutinous rice paste-like porcelain body: fine-grained, brilliant white and translucent when held up to light. The glaze surface features a luminous celadon glaze with a subtle bluish tint, smooth and lustrous like jade.Emperor Yongzheng favored an elegant and understated aesthetic, and the motifs and inscribed poems on this pair of bowls perfectly exemplify the shift toward scholar-artist sensibilities in imperial court porcelain.

The exterior of the bowls is decorated with the over-the-wall nine-peach motif (depicting nine longevity peaches accompanied by leaves and branches), paired with the inscribed poem: "The tiny peaches seem to mirror the visitor's delight; the spring goblet holds the beauty of the blooming flowers." The inclusion of literati-style inscriptions is a defining feature of Yongzheng porcelain, embodying the integration of poetry and painting.

The peaches depicted symbolize longevity in Chinese culture. The nine peaches correspond to the homophone of the Chinese character jiu (meaning "eternal"), conveying the auspicious implication of "enduring longevity." The inscribed poem adds a touch of literati elegance, which perfectly embodies the characteristic of "the literati-ization of imperial aesthetics" during the Yongzheng reign.
