Vessel shape: adopts the shape of a large vat, featuring a wide rim, a bulging belly, and a tapering base. With a massive overall size, it conforms to the traditional functions of large vats — both practical (for storing water, cultivating plants, etc.) and decorative. Its production requires superb shaping and firing techniques, which embody the porcelain-making technology of the era.Body and glaze:Porcelain body: if it dates from the Ming Dynasty, the body is thick, heavy, and firm; during the Qing Dynasty, as craftsmanship matured, the porcelain body became finer and more delicate.Glaze: the glaze surface is smooth and lustrous. The color of the underglaze blue depends on the cobalt pigment used — for example, the Ming Dynasty employed "sumaliqing" (imported cobalt pigment) or domestic cobalt pigments, while the Qing Dynasty used a variety of cobalt materials. The underglaze blue on this vat exhibits a subtle gradation of shades, which contrasts beautifully with the white glaze, exuding a simple and antique charm.Underglaze blue decoration & firing difficulty:The underglaze blue patterns are exquisitely painted: the child-play scenes, figures, and supporting landscapes feature smooth lines and vivid details, demonstrating the craftsmen's superb skills.Firing a large vat was extremely challenging — it required precise control of the kiln temperature to prevent deformation, resulting in a low success rate. This further highlights the high level of craftsmanship achieved at that time.
Decoration:
The main motif is the blue-and-white child-play pattern, depicting scenes of children at play — some engaged in games, others interacting with one another. Supporting elements such as trees, rocks, and flowers are also included in the composition.
The child-play pattern, a traditional auspicious decorative motif, symbolizes "prosperity with many children and auspiciousness in childhood joy." It reflects the aspirations of the time for a harmonious family and a thriving lineage.
The overall layout of the scene is rich yet well-organized; the children are portrayed with vivid expressions and lively postures, which not only conveys a strong sense of daily life but also exhibits remarkable artistic appeal.
