Porcelain Introduction: this blue-and-white and underglaze-red covered jar with reserved panels, applied floral decoration, and an animal-form knob exhibits a full and powerful shape. The jar features a rounded mouth, short neck, broad shoulders, a rounded belly that tapers to a ring foot, and is crowned by a lid topped with a beast-shaped finial—all embodying the dignified stability typical of such vessels.
The lid is decorated with a key-fret pattern in underglaze blue, while the knob is sculpted into an auspicious animal with vivid expression. From shoulder to belly, the body is outlined with rhombus-shaped reserved panels in underglaze blue. Within these panels, floral motifs are ornamented using a combined technique of applied relief and underglaze blue-and-red painting. The interplay of brilliant blue and deep red glazes, along with the raised three-dimensional flowers displaying delicate texture, breaks the monotony of flat painted decoration. Outside the reserved panels, the ground is painted with underglaze-blue wave patterns and other motifs, rendered in dense yet orderly lines.
In terms of body and glaze, the exposed clay at the foot reveals a fine, compact texture, while the overall glaze is pure white, glossy, and translucent. The underglaze blue appears bright and vibrant, and the underglaze red is rich and stable—their harmonious combination attests to the potter’s masterful control over glaze formulation and kiln temperature.
Integrating multiple techniques including underglaze blue, underglaze red, and applied relief, this covered jar is adorned with auspicious motifs and exemplifies extremely complex and refined craftsmanship. As a representative masterpiece of Yuan-dynasty blue-and-white and underglaze-red porcelain, it reflects the pinnacle of ceramic production achieved at Jingdezhen during that period.
Blue and white with underglaze red, commonly known as "blue and white plus purple", is a porcelain decoration technique that uses underglaze red to add patterns between blue and white motifs.
"Blue and white" refers to depicting patterns with blue and white pigments, then applying a transparent glaze, and firing it in a reducing flame at over 1200°C in one go to form underglaze color.
"Underglaze red" refers to a coloring material formulated with copper oxides (copper flowers) as colorants. Patterns are drawn on the biscuit (or on the biscuit that has been first applied with a blue-white glaze), then covered with a layer of blue-white glaze, and then loaded into a sagger and put into the kiln. Under a strong reducing flame atmosphere at 1250°C to 1280°C, high-valent copper is reduced to low-valent copper, presenting delicate yet calm red patterns, hence the name "underglaze red".
Due to the difficulty in producing qualified products, its products are extremely precious. Underglaze red can be used for decoration alone, but most of the time, it is combined with blue and white for decoration, which is called "blue and white with underglaze red". It features both the "elegant, quiet and stable" characteristics of blue and white, and adds the rich and magnificent quality of underglaze red, enriching the color effect and forming an elegant yet simple artistic style. Therefore, blue and white with underglaze red porcelain has become one of the precious varieties in China.
