Porcelain Introduction: this large blue-and-white vat with cloud and dragon patterns is of a huge size and plump shape, being a highly representative large-scale official kiln blue-and-white ware. In ancient imperial palaces, large vats with dragon patterns were mainly used to store water for fire prevention. Due to their massive size, they were called "auspicious vats" or "peace vats" and were mostly placed in palace courtyards, important pavilions, and imperial gardens. Besides their practical function, they themselves are magnificent display artworks, which centrally demonstrate the superb porcelain-making craftsmanship of the Xuande period of the Ming Dynasty and the majestic charm of imperial utensils.
According to collection statistics, most of the surviving pieces similar to this blue-and-white dragon-patterned large vat are kept in imperial collections, with very few scattered among the people. The Shanghai Museum houses a dragon-patterned vat from the Zhengtong period of the Ming Dynasty, and a blue-and-white double-dragon-patterned vat from the Jiajing period was unearthed in the underground palace of the Ming Dingling Mausoleum in Beijing's Thirteen Tombs. Additionally, a Jiajing imperial kiln blue-and-white dragon-patterned vat was featured on the Treasure Appraisal program, among others. Furthermore, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Idemitsu Museum of Arts in Tokyo each possess a Xuande-marked cloud-dragon-patterned jar with similar decorative motifs. No more than 3 such vats are in private collections or circulating in the market. Jincheng International Group spent four years, from March 2021 to June 2025, to complete the acquisition of this blue-and-white cloud-dragon-patterned vat, which is also known as the "No.1 Vat Under Heaven".
A Microcosm of the Empire: this large vat is the most intuitive and magnificent material evidence of the "Reign of Ren and Xuan"—a golden age. Its very existence testifies to the economic strength, organizational capacity, and technical reserves that the Ming Dynasty possessed at that time, which were sufficient to support such a huge and complex project.
A Totem of Power: the five-clawed dragon patterns on the vat's body are the most direct visual symbols of imperial power. It is not merely an artifact, but a movable "monument of power" forged from porcelain clay.
A Cultural Coordinate: it records the aesthetic orientation, ritual systems, and lifestyles of the early Ming court, providing irreplaceable physical materials for the study of ancient Chinese imperial kiln systems, court history, and material culture.
A Miracle in Materials Science: it adopted the world's top "formula" of the time—imported Sumaliqing cobalt material and the unique Macang clay from Jingdezhen. The former ensured the rich color of the blue-and-white and the characteristic rust spots, while the latter guaranteed the strength and stability of the huge body under high temperature.
The Limit of Firing Technology: firing such a huge vessel was a great challenge at that time. Every step from blank making, trimming, glazing to kiln firing was full of the risk of failure. Its successful firing represented the top engineering and technological level of the global ceramic handicraft industry in the 15th century.
Benchmark of Value: it is the ultimate collection coveted by top museums and private collectors worldwide. Its market value is not only reflected in the sky-high transaction prices at auctions, but more importantly, as a cultural symbol, it represents the supreme collecting status and historical weight.
