Famille rose square vase with "Wushuang Pu" (Gallery of Unrivaled Heroes) patterns from the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty is a typical category of late Qing porcelain featuring the "Wushuang Pu" theme, characterized by "combination of pictures and texts + literati elegance." It was mainly popular from the Daoguang to the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (a period when the "Wushuang Pu" theme flourished most). With a "square vase + beast-ear" shape, it is a classic style of late Qing display porcelain.
As a "Wushuang Pu square vase," it is a physical witness to the integration of literati culture and porcelain-making craftsmanship in the late Qing Dynasty, with extremely high theme recognition.
Main decoration: the vase is painted with portraits of historical celebrities accompanied by inscriptions ("Wushuang Pu" (Gallery of Unrivaled Heroes) collects 40 "unparalleled" figures from the Qin Dynasty to the Southern Song Dynasty, including heroes, loyal ministers, talented women, etc.). Beside the figure in the image is inscribed "Madam of Yan State, Guangyuan," corresponding to the historical figure in "Wushuang Pu," implicitly embodying the literati's implication of "respecting the ancestors and inheriting the cultural context."
Auxiliary decorations: beast ears (elephant ears / lion ears) are attached to both sides, which not only enhance the symmetrical beauty of the vessel's shape but also implicitly convey the blessing of "guarding auspiciousness."
